Today's focus: Lenovo at DemoFall launches two ThinkPads,
including an $800 laptop

By Keith Shaw

The name DemoMobile may be a thing of the past, but there were
still plenty of mobile computing-related products and services
at the DemoFall 2005 show, held last week in Huntington Beach,
Calif. This was the first year for DemoFall, which dropped its
"mobile" title in favor of adding more companies that might not
have necessarily had a mobile offerings.

Still, I had my mobile cap on as I searched for products and
services at the show, and I was not disappointed - the mobile
spirit lives on from several companies, which we'll highlight
here and in the next few newsletters.

The big mobile device news at the show came from Lenovo, which
announced two new widescreen ThinkPad notebooks (the Z-Series) -
the first time that a ThinkPad has come in a widescreen format.
In addition, the company announced a special edition of the
notebook that gets rid of the traditional black casing of the
ThinkPad with a slicker titanium case. Even cooler, the Z60m
model will include an embedded wide-area wireless radio that
gives users access to Verizon Wireless' Broadband Access network
(EV-DO).

The Z-Series notebooks include either a 15.4-inch display (Z60m)
or a 14-inch display (Z60t). The 14-inch model weighs just 4.2
pounds and measures only 1.1-inches thick, Lenovo says.

Something else that has carried over to Lenovo from the old IBM
days is its dedication to notebook protection. The Z-Series will
feature a new "inner armor chassis" that Lenovo equates to a
race car's roll cage - the stiffer chassis aims to reduce the
amount of stress on the notebook's internal components when the
notebook is dropped. The ThinkPads already feature a hard drive
protection system (the Active Protection System) that parks the
drive when it detects that it is falling (similar to an air
bag). Lenovo says the roll cage concept will be included in
future ThinkPads, in addition to the Z-Series.

Other features include three USB 2.0 ports, connections for
S-Video, VGA and IEEE1394 ports, and a 3-in-1 media card reader.
The system will use the full range of Intel processors and come
with a 100G-byte hard drive.

If that wasn't impressive enough, the Z60t will start at $1,099,
and the Z60m will start at $799 (did you ever think you would be
able to buy a ThinkPad for about $800?). Lenovo says the
notebooks will be available in October at the Lenovo Web site
