Maybe the biggest Google news was the curious fact that the company is building a massive core network-- most likely the largest in the world, and what may be, in essence, the company's own private Internet. Theories abound about its plans, everything from becoming the world's largest ISP and WiFi provider, to saving costs on bandwidth. The search giant made controversial news as well. The Authors Guild and three authors sued Google for copyright infringement, because Google Print will scan copyrighted books and make them available for searching for free online without publisher or author approval. Finally, Cisco was in the news as well, inking a deal with the China Education and Research Network (CERNET) to upgrade the world's largest educational network. How open and free will that network actually be? Considering that China yesterday announced a crackdown on Internet news sites, most likely not very.
