COUNTDOWN TO '08 #4: CONSUMER DEMAND FOR VOIP STRESSES TELEPHONY INFRASTRUCTURE

Having started up the technology media ladder in the mid-'80s, I recall with only mild twitching the stories we'd write year after year declaring that, finally, we really mean it this time 198X would, indeed, be the year of the LAN.

So it's with no small sense of déjà vu that I'm predicting that Voice over IP will have a major impact on the telephony infrastructure in 2008. No, I'm not declaring this another Year of VoIP. Rather, I'm saying that the rapid expansion of consumer VoIP services - coming from companies like Skype, Numbr, Jangl, TalkPlus, Jaxtr, and dozens of others both announced and in stealth - is creating a new scarcity in the market: the scarcity of 10-digit telephone numbers.

Last week, I talked to one company that is reserving numbers for its future product launch - a product that conceivably could hit 40 million small businesses nationwide. Blocks of numbers in the "premium" area codes, the founder reported, are getting harder to come by. As more consumers move to VoIP services, from business calling services to transactional and disposable numbers, the supply of telephone numbers dwindles.

KEITH SHAW
STUDY: THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY IS ABOUT TO GET SLOWER

In 2010, the amount of time it takes to download a YouTube video could take as much as two minutes, instead of the 10 seconds or so it takes today.

No big deal, right? So what if we have to wait a bit longer to see the latest movie trailer or download the latest hit song?

The big deal, according to Nemertes Research, is that a looming Internet slowdown, which could happen as soon as 2010, would "throttle innovation," both the technical kind that leads to newer and better applications, as well as the business innovation that relies on the technical innovations and applications to generate value. Nemertes says "the next Google, YouTube or Amazon might not rise, not because of a lack of demand, but due to an inability to fulfill that demand."

Now do I have your attention?
