BladeSystem Matrix takes aim at Cisco HP is taking aim at Cisco with BladeSystem Matrix, a converged software, server, storage and networking platform designed to compete against Cisco's Unified Computing System.

Sun fires back at Cisco with blade network switch Sun introduced its Nehalem-based server line-up on Tuesday, along with a new networking product that takes aim at an emerging rival in the server market, Cisco.

Oracle now a server competitor to Cisco? Oracle's announcement that it intends to acquire Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion creates a much stronger competitor to Cisco and others in data center servers than Sun did alone. That is, if Oracle intends to retain Sun's hardware business.

Sun deal revives Oracle's Network Computer dream What I'd give to be a fly on the wall in IBM CEO Sam Palmisano's office right now. Assuming he's the one who ultimately made the decision to play hardball in IBM's talks to acquire Sun Microsystems, he must be wondering how he could possibly have let Sun slip through his fingers and into the clutches of Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. When he got the word that Sun had eloped with Oracle and secured a $7.4 billion dowry, he was probably livid at having been left standing at the altar.

Cisco busts out beyond blade servers with Unified Computing System It's not a blade server – it's an architecture. Cisco stressed the holistic approach of its Unified Computing System during its widely watched launch Monday, claiming its innovations in tying together servers, storage, networking and virtualization make it unique in the industry. Observers trying to pit IT directly against HP and IBM data center blade servers were missing the point, Cisco officials suggested.

A New Green Gold Standard A recent Environmental Protection Agency study on energy-saving opportunities in servers and data centers noted that the industry uses an enormous amount of energy -- more than 1.5% of all electricity generated in the U.S. -- and that that number is expected to double over the next five years. So it's no surprise that many people see data centers as a major part of the climate change problem.
