Does the data center need an OS?
One of latest companies to get a cash infusion from famed Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz is Mesosphere, a startup that is essentially attempting to build an operating system for data centers ( about that news here). But it begs the question: Do data centers need an OS? The idea behind Mesos, which is the open source software the startup is commercializing, is that it can sit above all of the hardware and applications in a data center to dynamically provision and manage workloads and infrastructure. The alternative is having silos in a data center for various applications that are manually deployed. Instead, Mesos is intelligent software that finds the best place for workloads to run, monitors how resources are used and looks to consolidate workloads to run a more efficient data center. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Final thoughts from Cisco Live: You can't manage what you can't see
Cisco Live 2014, the company's 25th annual user event, is now in the books, and I've had some time to reflect on the show. At the show, Cisco did what it does best and gave attendees a glimpse of the future and where technology is headed. This helps Cisco customers stay out ahead of the industry trends and prepare for these trends to hit their businesses. This year, Cisco CEO John Chambers and the cast of other presenters gave us a heavy dose of Internet of Everything (IoE), cloud computing, data center evolution, mobility, collaboration, video and the need to use the network as a platform. The glue that connects all of these themes together is, of course, the network. This elevates the network from being the "pipes" of a company to being an enabler of these trends. If the network isn't operating properly then the trends I listed above won’t provide the company the benefits it may be seeking. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Cisco VNI: Annual internet traffic to grow 20% by 2018
The Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) has been around almost as long as this newsletter/blog, and this year’s predictions suggest that annual internet traffic will grow more than 20% over the next four years. Not surprisingly, video in general and HD/4K video in particular are responsible, with mobile-to-mobile devices driving much of the growth. I expected IP video to make up 79% of all IP traffic by 2018, up from 66% in 2013.The survey is also predicting a shift in traffic composition, suggesting that between now and 2018 most traffic will originate from devices other than personal computers. In addition, Cisco predicts that “Wi-Fi traffic will exceed wired traffic for the first time and high-definition (HD) video will generate more traffic than standard definition (SD) video,” according to the company’s news release. According to the survey, Wi-Fi connections will generate 61% of IP traffic by 2018, while cellular data services will contribute 15% of traffic. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Dell executive says HP's new Machine architecture is 'laughable'
Hewlett-Packard's attempt to come up with a new architecture for computers is "laughable" and would make trillions of dollars in software investment obsolete, a top Dell executive said Thursday.HP revealed a day earlier that it's developing a new computer design, dubbed The Machine, that will be able to handle vast quantities of data using far less electricity. It employs silicon photonics and a new, hyper-dense memory type called memristors, and will require HP to develop a new OS."The notion that you can reach some magical state by rearchitecting an OS is laughable on the face of it," John Swainson, head of Dell's software business, told reporters in San Francisco Thursday when asked to comment on the work.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Chambers to retire this fall?
Cisco CEO John Chambers may retire this fall amidst a massive reorganization that could lop tens of thousands of employees off its workforce. So says Scott Raynovich, author of the tech/business sheet The Rayno Report.Raynovich cites several sources “familiar with the chatter inside the company” for his prediction, which he touts as a major scoop for his organization. The timing would be consistent with what Chambers said back in 2012: that he planned to retire in two to four years, and a successor would be one of 10 Cisco executives. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

VMware corrects Cisco
In the continuing saga of VMware vs. Cisco, VMware fired the latest shot with a counter to Cisco’s claims that its networking rival’s NSX network virtualization platform has only found a “handful” of paying customers. HP unveils Cisco SDN-like switch
HP this week will unveil a software-defined networking switch and application that add bulk to the company’s 50-switch SDN arsenal and should enable it to compete more directly with Cisco and Arista on this front. The switch, being unveiled at HP’s annual Discover customer conference in Las Vegas, is called the FlexFabric datacenter 7900 series. It is a nonblocking Layer 2/3 Clos switch with 40G interfaces and support for OpenFlow, and VXLAN and NVGRE tunneling for network virtualization. It is designed to integrate the virtual overlay with the physical underlay networks to create a unified fabric for network visibility, availability and response time, and for supporting rapid workload mobility for VMware vSphere vMotion environments. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
