From Bradley Mitchell, your Guide to Computer Networking
Verizon Wireless made news this week with their plan to throttle LTE customers who consume the largest amount of data. Because the policy will only affect few users and only at certain times, this shouldn't be a big deal. Unless the customer really, really needs that bandwidth right at that moment.

What Is a Bandwidth Cap?
Traditional bandwidth caps restrict a person to a fixed amount of data traffic per month, and if that limit is exceeded, Bad Things Happen such as overage charges, bandwidth throttling, and general chastising.

Introduction to Computer Network Speed
There's more to the story of network speed than just bandwidth, however. This often neglected thing called latency can play a huge role. Just ask any online gamer.

You can use these speed test services to measure your download speeds and verify the Internet service provider is supplying you the expected amount of bandwidth. These tools can also help you measure the results of any performance enhancements (tweaks) you may make to your network setup.

How Fast Does Your Network Need to Be?
Measuring network speed can get complicated, but ultimately what matters to most people is how well the network responds when they are trying to accomplish some task. Just how fast your computer network needs to be depends on the usage model. In general, as more devices and people share a network, the network's overall speed must be to support the total load.
