Zero-day in Seagate NAS allows attacker to remotely get unauthorized root access
Thousands of Seagate Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices are defenseless against a zero-day remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability. Back in October, security researcher OJ Reeves attempted to responsibly disclose the hole in Seagate's Business Storage 2-Bay NAS products, which ironically use a tagline of "deadlines happen. Be ready." But Seagate still hasn't issued a firmware fix, so Reeves has now publicly disclosed the bug.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Box woos financial services firms with a tailored cloud offering
It was just about two weeks ago that Box set out to remove a major barrier to the cloud for security-minded organizations with its Encryption Key Management capability. Now, it's taken that focus a step further with a full-fledged cloud storage service aimed squarely at financial services firms. The aim behind Box's EKM, now in beta, is to give businesses in highly regulated industries such as finance the ability to maintain exclusive control over the digital keys used to encrypt their data.Historically, the lack of that kind of control is a big part of what has kept many companies in such industries off of the cloud. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

The downside to mass data storage in the cloud
The cloud can be an enormously cost-effective way to increase storage and computing musculature, and also, sadly, a way to further add misery to those seeking privacy—or who just want to be left alone. It's rare to see organizations stand up and shout, "we'll not give your data to anyone!" or "the life of all stored data, except opt-in assets you want us to store, is always 90 days!" or "yes, we can determine in absolute certainty that your data has been erased to protect you and your identity."The cloud, in some warrens, has become a storage ground for the various factories of "big data," whose ideals are generally to sell things to consumers and businesses. Correlating facts is huge. Ask Target, whose insight into discovering pregnancies helped them capture a nicely profitable market in the pregnancy and new mother world. Smart, you say. There is a downside to this.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Google more than doubles free music storage in the cloud
Google has made its free cloud storage service for music a bit more appealing, especially considering alternatives from Apple and Amazon.Users can now store up to 50,000 songs for free in the cloud through the company's Google Play Music service, which also provides access to millions of songs through a paid subscription. Previously, the limit for free cloud storage was 20,000 songs. With the growth of apps like Spotify, Rdio and Pandora, more digital music listeners are likely weighing the pros and cons of downloading and storing songs versus streaming them. But the storage boost for Google's cloud service, announced Wednesday, is a nice option that could help to keep downloading alive, by making it easier for people to listen to their stored songs while they're out and about. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
