5 reasons you should move your video to specialty storage
This vendor-written tech primer has been edited by Network World to eliminate product promotion, but readers should note it will likely favor the submitter’s approach.Video is everywhere, and growing exponentially. According to a recent report, 35 billion video ads were viewed in December, representing year-over-year growth of more than 100%. And every industry is seeing video growth, which creates a problem for data managers because video challenges storage management in four ways: Performance requirements are not served well by traditional storage architecture. Rapid video growth can overwhelm storage environments while resource utilization is masked by virtualization Use of traditional backup tools make data protection expensive and challenging Long-term data value means this is not a temporary problem If, however, you move video to specialty storage, you’ll achieve five amazing benefits:To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Beyond Alerts: Using orchestration to realize network self-healing
Managing modern networked systems and applications is daunting because infrastructure is complex and things can go wrong in so many parts of the technology stack -- servers, storage, network devices, applications, hypervisors, APIs, DNS, etc. How can you address the challenge?A good place to start: problems that can solve themselves, should. This is called “self-healing” in the systems management space. As our systems are increasingly virtualized, the opportunity to have our systems work around and self-correct issues has grown greatly in recent years. The simplest example of self-healing is automatically restarting a service or process that stops or otherwise becomes unresponsive. It is important to keep in mind that this is a workaround and that automated activity of all sorts needs to be logged and monitored, in turn. If an application leaks memory such that it needs to be automatically restarted several times a day, that restart is not the fix, it’s a Band-Aid that is mitigating the impact while the developers responsible fix the application. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Amazon's Go SDK one step closer with preview release
Amazon Web Services has announced the first Developer Preview of its SDK for the Go programming language, giving developers who want to integrate cloud services in their apps more choice. The SDK makes it easier for developers to integrate their Go applications with Amazon’s cloud-based storage, database and messaging services. Go is a Google-developed open source language developed with simplicity and efficiency as the main goals. Its use in the development of the Docker container platform has helped improve its standing.Amazon already offers SDKs for Java, PHP, Python and Ruby. Go is nowhere near as popular as any of those, but it’s still an interesting addition. The language is also supported on Google’s App Engine platform. Just like Amazon, Google also lets developers use Java, PHP and Python. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Love it or hate it, cloud storage is here to stay. Yet the fact is that cloud storage providers, like all IT companies, can experience outages or even go out of business. Moreover, the ever-present threat of data-corrupting malware and ransomware means that synchronizing to the cloud no longer offers adequate protection against data loss.MORE ON NETWORK WORLD: 12 Free Cloud Storage options With this in mind, let’s look at how you can work with more than one cloud storage service to put together a cloud-based disaster recovery strategy to protect your files. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

HP's Project Synergy promises Amazon-type provisioning for bare metal servers
Hewlett-Packard is developing new capabilities for its OneView systems management software that it says will allow for automated provisioning of applications across pools of servers and storage. The premise is that businesses want to deploy applications more quickly to take advantage of opportunities in areas like mobile and big data analytics, but that the process is too slow if they’re doing it in-house or on hosted bare-metal servers. At its Discover conference Wednesday, HP kicked off a multi-year effort, known as Project Synergy, that it said will turn existing hardware into pools of compute, storage and networking that can be assembled in software according to the needs of an application or workload. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
