“Storage Is Only the Beginning:” How LTFS is Exceeding Limits

Over the years there has been enormous innovation in LTO technology, including the introduction of the Linear Tape File System (LTFS). LTFS represents a significant, positive change in the way storage managers and content providers utilize tape.

While tape storage can be used as a means of archiving ‘cold’ data, by integrating LTFS, tape is also capable of being an easily accessible and versatile data storage solution for all enterprise needs.

With LTFS, it’s possible to now get a handle on the biggest issue with excessive data: how to best manage it. LTFS makes finding and copying files to tape as easy as dragging and dropping, as you would with a USB stick or external hard drive. If you want to share a large file with someone else, they could easily find that file and copy it over to their own system. LTFS enables organizations to leverage the cost and reliability of LTO technology with the accessibility and ease of use they are accustomed to with disk-based solutions - a win-win for organizations storing large quantities of data!

Moral of the story: there is no limit to the capabilities of tape for storage.

If you’re interested in learning more about how LTFS could help improve and expand your data management, come see us at ASIS International! The LTO Program team will be there September 28 through October 1, and we’d love for you to stop by our booth so we can share how LTFS can exceed expectations for your data management needs.
